Working within the channel islands for a private client, the team provided a number of glazing element to this substantially extended residential property. These glazed elements included: 2 No. triangular rooflights, a hydraulically actuated access hatch onto the flat roof terrace, and the most impacting part of the development was the main Dual Pitched Rooflight with a hipped end.
The Glazing was supplied in a bespoke glazing system where the glass panes are structurally boned back to an internal aluminium framework. This is all supported on a main steelwork frame which creates a flush silicone filled external surface. This flush silicone surface is to help prevent water and dirt traps from forming. The glass units are supplied in a primed black layer over the framework all to create an aesthetic glass finish when viewed externally. The Main rooflight also included 2 No. top hung thermally broken aluminium roof vents operated on 240 volt actuator. These roof vents can be manually controlled or built into a building management system.
Another possible option which was considered for this type of project included solar control glass, which is used to minimise glare from the sun and limits the solar gain within the inside of the building. A Ritec low maintenance coating to the glass can also be applied; this coating limits dirt build up on the glass which will reduce the number of cleans the glazing will require. Finally, the use of laminated glass which cuts out 99% of UV rays could be applied to the glazing elements. This would help prevents damage to soft furnishings and artwork.
